Leadership in government, business, and educational entities proclaim Dr. Jay Strack to be a dynamic communicator and author. Jay is the author of several highly acclaimed books, including: The Three Success Secrets of Shamgar. As President and Founder of Student Leadership University, the premiere global leadership training for students, he has successfully merged the classroom with behind the scenes “edu-tainment” experiences in Orlando, San Diego, San Antonio, Washington D.C., England, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, China and Africa, thus providing a customized environment for learning. More than 30 years of volunteerism as a speaker in high schools and universities has given him a unique understanding and perspective to inspire students. Strack speaks to students in the same way he presents to major corporations and professional sports team, believing if we give them the right tools, students can soar into future-tense thinking and influence as leaders. Having prevailed over drug addiction and an abusive childhood, Jay believes, “If I can overcome the past and believe in the future, anyone can. Your dreams determine your destiny.”

[content] => <p>Pat Williams is a basketball Hall-of-Famer, currently serving as co-founder and senior vice president of the NBA’s Orlando Magic. As one of America’s top motivational speakers, he has addressed thousands of executives in organizations ranging from Fortune 500 companies and national associations to universities and nonprofits.  Clients include AllState, American Express, Citrix, Coca-Cola, Deloitte, Disney, Honeywell, IBM, ING, Lockheed Martin, Nike, Millennium Pharmaceuticals and Tyson Foods to name a few.  Pat is also the author of over 80 books, his most recent title being <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Difference-You-Make-The-Influence/dp/0800721683" target="_blank">The Difference You Make: Changing Your World Through the Impact of Your Influence</a>.</p>

<p>Since 1968, Pat has been in the NBA as general manager for teams in Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia—including the 1983 World Champion 76ers—and now the Orlando Magic, which he co-founded in 1987 and helped lead to the NBA finals in 1995 and 2009. In 1996, Pat was named as one of the 50 most influential people in NBA history by Beckett’s, a national publication. In 2012, Pat received the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.</p>

<p>Pat has been an integral part of NBA history, including bringing the NBA to Orlando.  He has traded Pete Maravich as well as traded for Julius Erving, Moses Malone, and Penny Hardaway. He has won four NBA draft lotteries, including back-to-back winners in 1992 and 1993. He also drafted Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney and Darryl Dawkins.  He signed Billy Cunningham, Chuck Daly, and Matt Guokas to their first professional coaching contracts. Nineteen of his former players have become NBA head coaches, nine have become college head coaches while seven have become assistant NBA coaches.</p>

<p>Additionally, Pat served for seven years in the United States Army, spent seven years in the Philadelphia Phillies organization—two as a minor league catcher and five in the front office—and has also spent three years in the Minnesota Twins organization.</p>

<p>Pat and his wife, Ruth, are the parents of 19 children, including 14 adopted from four nations, ranging in age from 26 to 40. For one year, 16 of his children were all teenagers at the same time. Currently, Pat has 12 grandchildren and counting…with twins due in July. Pat and his family have been featured in Sports Illustrated, Readers Digest, Good Housekeeping, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Focus on the Family as well as all of the major network and cable television news channels.</p>

<p>Pat was diagnosed in February of 2011 with Multiple Myeloma.  After several rounds of chemo treatments, Pat received a bone marrow transplant where the doctors injected him with almost 5 million of his own stem cells.  Pat’s recovery from the stem cell transplant has been remarkable and the doctors are extremely pleased.  While Multiple Myeloma is incurable the goal is to get the cancer into remission (Pat’s personal slogan has been “The Mission is Remission”); Pat’s doctors have told him that they are unable to detect any myeloma in his body.  Pat has accepted positions on several boards for different cancer groups, including an appointment on the Board of Directors for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Pat spends many hours each week responding to emails and phone calls of others affected by cancer, offering hope and words of encouragement.</p>

<p>Pat teaches an adult Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of Orlando and hosts three weekly radio shows. In the last 15 years, he has completed 58 marathons—most recently, the 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon—and also climbed Mt. Rainier. He is a weightlifter, Civil War buff and serious baseball fan. Every winter he plays in Major League Fantasy Camps and has caught Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, Rollie Fingers, Gaylord Perry, Phil Niekro, Tom Seaver and Goose Gossage.</p>

<p>Pat was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, earned his bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University, and his master’s degree at Indiana University. He is a member of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame after catching for the Deacon baseball team, including the 1962 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship team. He is also a member of six other hall of fames around the country.</p>

If you have special dietary restrictions or food allergies, they should be submitted to SLU no later than 45 days before the program begins. If something comes up after registration, you can update your registration information up to 15 days before the program begins. Please be sure to offer specifics on what you cannot eat and what can be substituted. We will make every effort to accommodate, but there may be certain times when this is not possible. We strongly recommend that you bring prepared foods or snacks with you that are compliant with your dietary needs.

FAQs

What is the payment schedule and what payment options are available?

A $100 deposit is due at the time of registration, and the remaining balance is due 45 days before the program begins. Any registration not paid in full by this day will incur a $25 late fee. You have the following options for your registration payments:

  • Paper Checks: You can mail these to our office (SLU, PO Box 649, Keller, TX 76244). Checks must be received within ten days of registration.
  • Electronic Checks: You can do this through your online account.
  • Credit Cards: You can use AMEX, VISA, MC, or Discover. A 3% transaction fee will be added to any credit card payments.

What should I bring to SLU 101?

  • Bible & Pen (syllabi for notes will be provided)
  • Clothes (see Dress Code)
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Spending money for merch table/snacks/souvenirs

What about travel protection for SLU 101?

We strongly recommend that you purchase trip protection as SLU prepays all hotels, meals, transportation, etc., 30 to 120 days before the conference. Therefore, we cannot pass a refund on to you other than as noted on the registration page. Click here for more information on travel protection. Travel protection must be purchased through the portal before the final payment deadline for the trip or before you make the final payment for the trip (whichever date comes first); you cannot add it after this date.

How are students roomed together at SLU 101?

As part of the registration process, both groups and individuals must submit a rooming list no later than 45 days before the program.

Groups:

Tuition rates are based on four people sharing a room. If you are unable to fill a room completely, you may request that SLU fill those empty spots with another student(s). If SLU is unable to fill the room, additional charges will apply (see empty fee price above). You may be billed for this after the final payment date, as necessary. Rollaway beds are not available.

Singles/Individuals:

SLU will automatically place you in a room with up to three other student attendees of the same gender based on the following guidelines:

  • Rooms may not be co-ed unless both attendees are members of the same family.
  • One individual student under 18 cannot be in a room by themselves.
  • SLU will not room an under-18 student with anyone over 18 if they are not from the same group.

If a parent is not attending the conference, but would like to stay in the room with their student, you may pay the applicable empty spot fees to buy out the room. You may request this on the rooming list form after registering.

I am driving to SLU 101. Do I need to pay for parking?

Self-parking is complimentary for the SLU group. You should plan on parking your vehicle and not using it till the last SLU session is completed.

What are the age requirements for SLU 101?

To attend as a single, a student must be at least 15 years old. To attend with a group, students should be at least 14 years old or going into 8th grade.

What do I do when I arrive at the hotel on Day 1 of SLU 101?

Registration is from 1:00pm-3:00pm on Day One. You will check in at the SLU table to pick up both your room keys and conference materials. You will need to print and bring a signed Participant Waiver and Info Form for every student and adult attending the conference. The form for any attendee under the age of 18 requires a parent signature. (Click here to print the form or find online under “Important Documents” in your account.)

What if I have dietary restrictions or food allergies?

If you have special dietary restrictions or food allergies, they should be submitted to SLU no later than 45 days before the program begins. If something comes up after registration, you can update your registration information up to 15 days before the program begins. Please be sure to offer specifics on what you cannot eat and what can be substituted. We will make every effort to accommodate, but there may be certain times when this is not possible. We strongly recommend that you bring prepared foods or snacks with you that are compliant with your dietary needs.

What is the difference between a Group/Family vs. Singles/Individuals at SLU 101?

A group/family means there is at least one adult chaperone attending the conference with a student.

Singles/Individuals are students attending without an adult. These students will be assigned an SLU team member, who serves as their chaperone for the week.

Do I need to bring a Medical Release Form?

GROUPS: Group leaders must bring a medical release form for any minors attending without a parent/guardian and keep those forms with you at all times during the program. Medical release forms must empower your group leader (not SLU) to authorize medical treatment for the students you are bringing to the program.

SINGLES: Any student attending without a chaperone must complete the SLU Medical Release Form during the online registration process.

I am flying to SLU 101. Is transportation provided to/from the airport?

Groups are responsible for their own transportation between the airport and the hotel. Once you arrive at the hotel, transportation to/from the parks is included with the conference registration.

For singles/individuals, an SLU team member will meet students at the baggage claim areas for the respective airlines on which they are flying. The name and contact number for this person will be provided a week before the event. For this purpose, flight information has to be submitted to SLU by the deadline. Due to TSA regulations, we are unable to meet students at the gate. We are not able to accept unaccompanied minors flying on any airline. Students will be put on a commercial shuttle service or a taxi with other program participants and will be transported to the program hotel. At the end of the week at approximately 1:00pm, students will be put on a commercial shuttle service or a taxi with other program participants and transported back to the airport.
